Motivational Bucks

I have been trying to figure out a way to motivate our kids to do good. They are great kids, but sometimes they drive me crazy! For example, when we put the kids to bed which includes reading them stories, brushing their teeth, singing songs, going potty, saying prayers, and tucking them in, we still find them roaming around, demanding yogurt drinks, swapping beds and rooms, and asking how dinosaurs lay eggs. Anything to delay the inevitable of going to sleep.
I start work at 11am and most nights work as late as 9pm. By this time I am ready for a break as is Jill. So we spend time reading, watching a movie, or playing Mario Kart on the Wii (Jill is very good with the stroller car). We hate having to play referee after hours with the kids.

So one night we were watching a rerun on our Office DVD's with the episode where Dwight is put in charge of the office and uses Schrute Bucks to motivate the office. So I came up with the idea of Daddy Bucks. I presented it at our family home evening last night and the kids seemed to get the idea. This morning I spent some time creating the paper money and it evolved into Jonah Bucks, Pooky Bucks, and Ashton Bucks. The kids love it.

We are planning a trip to go to one of the other islands on a Saturday. The kids need to earn 10 "Bucks" in the next two weeks to go. The motivational tool worked. We put them to bed and they stayed there without a peep earning each child a "Daddy Buck". I will keep you posted how it works out.

You are welcome to print some out for yourself, but please don't flood the market with these babies it will ruin everything. By-the-way, since I work with currency exchange rates you may be wondering, what the conversion rate is . . . it is the same as unicorns to leppercons (Office joke).

We've been connecting with Doug's brothers across the country to play Mario Kart together...do you have that capability there? I can't say I'm good with the stroller, or any other vehicle for that matter!

P.S. I'm glad to hear that someone is inspired by Dwight. ;)

Thanks for your great reports, Rich (and Jill, sometimes, too)! We love seeing photos of the family and hearing about all your adventures!

Lots of love,
Mom/Grandma D.

I'm so impressed you are making "Schrute bucks" actually work! I think Dwight's got something to teach us all.

I didn't know you watched the office.

Also, I'm wondering where the nickname "Pooky" came from.

Seems like kids are willing to work for bucks for short periods. They either need lots of raises or you have to trick them into thinking that this old motivational idea is all new and exciting again. Good luck!!!!
