On this morning, we also stopped at Dita, a little village where some members of our ward live. The members there live in very humble circumstances and cannot afford to travel to church, so a couple other members have been paying for their Jeepney ride each week. Rich is hoping to work with others in the ward to set up a little bit of farming or other means for the members to be able to afford to come and maybe help in other ways, too.
We also tried to find a place to buy larger chickens on this morning, but to no avail. We could only find chicks or hens that were passed their prime (done laying, ready for a willing butcher).
Anyway, a couple days later, Rich started to come down with what we thought was a nasty cold and fever. Within a couple of days, the fever persisted and worsened, joined by cold sweats and a hacking cough. I started to worry when his fever hit nearly 103, so we went to the hospital. After two days of blood tests, the doctors confirmed that it was dengue. Rich had to return to the hospital daily for a few days to make sure his platelet level didn't drop too low. We were very grateful it did not and that he was able to recuperate here at home.
He is feeling better now, but I think he still feels weaker than normal and is still suffering from cold symptoms. He has been very patient throughout the experience, but I know it has been frustrating for him to be "down" for a few days. I'm just grateful his fever is gone, it was pretty miserable.
So next time we decide to take a drive, we will be sure to slather on the bug lotion. We are pretty good about putting on bug lotion here before walks, spraying for bugs around our yard (and Rich just bought two electric mosquito bug killers for outside), etc, but I think the real danger is when we travel.
