The Tops

We went on a Sunday drive up to "The Tops" which is a lookout over the city and island. Unfortunately, by time we got to the top we couldn't see anything because it was raining so hard. Kids had fun. By time we got back in the valley we were driving through rivers that used to be streets. Here is a picture of my gorgeous family at The Tops.

Crazy Philippines

Some funny and not so funny things of the Philippines.

- When the person on the other side of the phone line can't understand or isn't following what you are saying they pretend they can't hear you, "Hello. . . Hello?"
I respond, "Can you hear me?"
" Yes Sir, can I help you?"
This sometimes happens 3 or 4 times during the phone conversation.

- Nothing is private here. It is not uncommon for a stranger to ask you, "Where do you live?, Is your wife a Filipina?, How much do you pay for rent?, How much does your company pay you?"

- If you cut your finger you need to purchase "plasters", Filipino equivalent to a Band-aid.

- Pronouns are all the same. His, her, he, and she are all interchangable. It throws you when someone is talking about their wife and begins to reference her as a he.

- The word "sexy" means "good looking". Jill and I flipped the first time we heard the Relief Society President say to Savannah, "Savannah, you are so sexy!"

- The word "oh" means "yes". It is difficult to know if they are understand what you just said or are confused.
"I will meet you tomorrow."
"Oh."
Jill sends mixed signals in Primary when she says to the misbehaving child, "Oh, Oh, Oh! sit reverently." She intents to say, "Stop, Stop, Stop! sit reverently." but in a nicer way. Yet, the child may be understanding it, "Yes, Yes, Yes! Sit reverently." Jill gets many weird looks in Primary.

We would love for you to contact us. In Cebu we are 14 hours ahead of Utah Time. So if it is Monday at 4pm in Utah, it is Tuesday at 6am in Cebu.

The best way to contact us is through Skype. Download Skype for free at http://www.skype.com/. If you have a webcam then we can video conferance as well. This is best for the kids as they love seeing friends back at home. You can see them too.

You can Call us: We have a local SLC number that rings our Skype phone. I use this for work so don't be alarmed if you get the machine. Leave a message and a good time to get back to you.

We have cell phones here as well, but it will cost you between $0.22 - $0.40 a minute to call us. This is best in an emergency.

(Note that the mail system is not that good over here. Send items Fedex. Also declare value next to zero so that we don't have to pay more to receive the package then it is worth - they charge a lot of taxes on imports. Also note that Cebu has almost everything that you can find in Utah except for real ranch dressing, water balloons, and a good mexican restaurant so it may be best to ask Jill before you send anything)
